In the west these submarines are called AKULA (Russian for shark).  To the Russians the subs BARRS Class  Project 971.

 

The raised masts from left to right are Attack Periscope, SNOOP SLAB/ SNOOP PAIR (Radar and Electronic Countermeasures,)  Number 2 Scope, PERT SPRING (Communications) and PARK LAMP (Direction Finder)

 

This is a great shot of the business end of a 688 I Class American Submarine. These are the Vertical Launch Tubes with the hatches open. The white circles are the main vents. The bronze circle is the capstan.
